More than half a million breathalyzer tests are performed each year. Over 100,000 of them return a positive reading for being over the legal limit.

  • Don’t Drive if you have drunk alcohol recently
  • Don’t offer anyone who is driving alcoholic drinks.
  • Don’t Get in a car with a driver who has been drinking
  • Plan your way back home so that you don’t need to drive, you could always phone a taxi if there are no transport links.
  • You may still be over the legal limit after a heavy night of drinking, proceed with caution, drinking more water will not lower your alcohol blood level. The only thing you can do is wait until they return to normal levels
  • Consequences

  • 6 months’ imprisonment
  • Up to £5,000 fine
  • A driving ban for at least 1 year (3 years if convicted twice in 10 years)
  • Causing Death by Careless Driving when under the influence of drink

  • Up to 14 years’ imprisonment
  • An unlimited fine
  • A ban from driving for at least 2 years
  • An extended driving test before your licence is returned

  • Slower Reaction time
  • Increased stopping distances.
  • Poor judgement of speed, shapes and depth
  • A Reduced field of vision
  • Drowsiness
  • Shorter attention span.
  • Please be safe and make sure you, or anyone you know doesn't attempt to get behind the wheel of a vehicle when drunk. Even if they appear sober as little as 1 pint of beer could be over the legal limit.
